As a languages student I always, always get the same responses when I tell people what I study;
1) OMG so are you fluent?!
2) OMG speak some Spanish to me!!
Both will get the response ‘no’. The reason I’m going to Spain for the year is to become fluent and just because I can speak Spanish it doesn’t mean I have a really hilarious sentence up my sleeve ready for you. If you study history could you suddenly tell me some history?
Because I’m in a state of panic that my Spanish is nowhere near good enough to live in Spain, I’m working hard just to boost my confidence! As I have studied Spanish from beginner level since September 2012, my teachers seem to have focussed more on grammar hoping that we would add in our own vocabulary learning. This summer I have tried to do my best to learn as much vocabulary as possible using Practice Makes Perfect; Spanish Vocabulary (Amazon, £0.01 yeah really!) and perfecting my grammar too using Pasos Spanish; Practical Grammar (Amazon, £9).
I’m also trying to read as much as possible. When in Mallorca with my family last week I made sure to pick up a Spanish newspaper, a few magazines and as many leaflets as possible from cathedrals etc. I have bought The Witches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and The stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende, all in Spanish. As I have read all these in English too it makes it a lot easier to work out what a phrase means if I don’t understand it first time. Similarly, I have been watching some of my favourite Disney films in Spanish for the same reason, for example Cinderella, Toy Story and Tangled.
I know that to those not learning a language this blog may not have been the most interesting thing you’ve ever read but now you all know how I’m spending my summer on days that I’m not out doing things!

Como un estudiante de idiomas siempre, siempre personas se dicen las mismas respuestas cuando los dijo mi bachillerato;
1) OMG hablas con fluidez?!
2) OMG hábleme un poco español!!
Para los dos, dijo ‘no’. La razón para mi ano en España es poder hablar con fluidez y solo porque hablo español, no significa que tengo una frase hilarante en mi manga para ti. Si estudias la historia puedes decirme alguna historia de repente?

Debido he estudio español ab initio hasta Septiembre 2012, parece que mis maestros se han centrado más en la gramática con la esperanza de que nos gustaría añadir en nuestro propio aprendizaje del vocabulario. Este verano he tratado de hacer mi mejor para aprender tanto como sea posible. Cuando estuve en Mallorca con mi familia la semana pasada compré un periódico español, algunas revistas y otros tantos panfletos como sea posible de las catedrales, etc. He comprado las brujas y Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate de Roald Dahl y Los cuentos de Eva Luna de Isabel Allende, todo en español. Como he leído todo esto en inglés también es mucho más fácil de suponer qué significa una frase si yo no lo entiendo primera vez. Del mismo modo, he estado viendo algunas de mis películas favoritas de Disney en español por la misma razón, por ejemplo, la Cenicienta, Toy Story y Tangled.
Yo sé que para las personas que no están estudiando un idioma, es posible que este blog no es la cosa más interesante que has leído pero ahora sabes cómo estoy pasando mi verano en las días que no estoy saliendo y haciendo cosas!
