The First Week! La Primera Semana!

ARRIVING WITH MUM
Packing was an absolute pain in my ass.  If you think packing for uni is hard, try doing it with a maximum of 50kg that must strictly be weighted 20kg + 20kg + 10kg!  Luckily, I’m very good at packing.  I easily managed to fill one suitcase and pack another beautifully however this left them 16kg and 28kg. Not great. I managed to surprise myself and everyone else and stuffed more into the first to make it 20.1kg however the other was still 24kg (I thought it was just over 23!) so I got charged £40 at the airport for it. Gutted. The flight was fine and arriving in Alicante with mum was nice and easy so I didn’t really care about the money at this point!  Me and mum over the next few days bought some necessities for my room (added up to about 20 euros!), bought lots of food, we went to the beach for the day for her final bit of sun of the year and we ate a LOT of very good food!! She’s told me she’s coming back just for the fried brie! Saying goodbye was obviously a bit emotional – more for mum than me! Remember mum – don’t be sad because I’ve gone, be sad because you’re jealous! 😉

MY FLAT
Although my school is in San Juan, I have decided to live in Sant Vicente del Raspeig because that’s where all the students are and I really want to be living with people my age!  It’s a 3rd floor,  4 bedroom flat that’s fully furnished and equipped with pretty much everything I need!  At the moment there’s me, David, Noelia and another girl called Helena who’s moving out soon and will be replaced with another guy (not sure who yet).  They all seem really nice and I’m looking forward to getting to know them properly over the next few weeks!  The only downside is that there’s no air con. I have a fan that I use occasionally but I’m slowly getting used to the heat. Oh, we also have a cat called Lua. She likes to smell my suitcases.

MY SCHOOL
As I said, it’s placed in the San Juan area of Alicante.  I went to visit it this week and it’s obvious that the teachers are VERY excited to have me! It’s not very common to have a native English teacher so I think this particular primary school is the envy of all the others in the surrounding area!  I’ll work 12 hours a week and have Fridays free so I can travel the country or make a weekend trip home occasionally.  I gave them the 4 Roald Dahl books that I brought from home and I’ve sent them an email with 10 craft activities to widen their resources.  It’ll take me an hour or so to travel on the tram to work but I’ve decided to use this time wisely – practice my grammar or vocabulary or prereading for next year etc.  Hopefully I can make final year a bit easier for myself!
MEETING OTHER LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS
Over the last few days I’ve been spending time with a few other language assistants doing the same thing as me.  We’ve gone for drinks & tapas, an adventure day in the city, a beach day and a night out.  I know I should probably be doing all this with Spanish people to practice my Spanish but it’s very useful and comforting to know people in the same position so we can help each other out!

THINGS I’VE LEARNT SO FAR
  •          Fried brie is amazing
  •          It’s possible to sleep without air con – even when its 26 degrees at night
  •          Don’t go in the sea if you have a blister
  •          Everyone here seems to have a pet
  •          I’m actually starting to like beer
  •          I love fried brie

So far I’m having a great time in Spain – it’s a lot of hard work doing everything in this heat and I still have a LOT of admin to sort out (NIE, phone, bank etc)!  I’m very excited for the next few weeks and I’m looking forward to starting my new job on the 6thOctober.

P.S. This is a one off special mention for Martha: “I want to be in every blog please… I just love the fame.” 😉

COSAS HE APRENDIDO HASTA AHORA
• Me encanta queso brie frito
